MEDIA RELEASE – Australian Christian Lobby

3 June 2015

The Australian Christian Lobby welcomed results of an Essential Research poll indicating support for same-sex marriage had plummeted a massive 13% since a Crosby|Textor poll in July 2014.

ACL Managing Director Lyle Shelton said the results indicated that there is nothing inevitable about redefining marriage.

“This is an extraordinary result,” Mr Shelton said.  “It demonstrates that Bill Shorten’s intervention in the marriage debate has put the same-sex marriage campaign on the back foot.”

A July 2014 Crosby|Textor poll found a record 72% support for same-sex marriage.  Yesterday’s Essential Report found support for redefining marriage at 59%.  This week’s Essential Report was conducted between 27 and 31 May, after Opposition Leader Bill Shorten made news with his plan to introduce a private member’s bill to redefine marriage.  In the same period, opposition to redefining marriage had leapt 10% to 30%.

Mr Shelton said that while the results indicated an uphill battle ahead to preserve marriage, the poll would bring encouragement to supporters of preserving marriage.

“This poll clearly demonstrates that momentum for redefining marriage has slipped significantly,” said Mr Shelton.

“The more this issue is discussed, the more voters are turned off.  This is what we saw in New Zealand where opposition to redefining marriage rose dramatically as the public’s attention focused on the issue.

“Preserving marriage remains a big task.  It will be like climbing Everest.  But these results clearly show there is nothing inevitable about change and that preserving marriage is indeed possible.”
